Some things are missing from Jonas's world that we have here. Such as freedom to learn things at your own pace and being able to share things with other people. Lois Lowry leaves these things out because she must feel that it makes the story line more interesting. It may seem more interesting because the community that Jonas is in does not allow certain things which is a form of suspense to the reader because they are always asking questions such as "why can't they do that," or "why are they all the same." Overall Lois Lowry is saying that the community has much stricter rules and does not allow much freedom to anyone.
